Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church
The New Auditorium and Youth Center at St. Stephen’s Church in Sewickley, PA, included the design of a new 14,500 SF auditorium/multi-purpose space that functions more as a hotel ballroom, as it can be divided into a number of sections. The space can accommodate 600 persons for contemporary worship, meetings, dining and performance. In addition, the project included an 11,000 SF renovation of the existing education wing to update classroom space.
Across the parking lot is the Henning Center, a gambrel roofed structure from 1910. CFB designed a 5,200 SF addition and the house was totally renovated to become the youth center for the vibrant congregation. All work was completed in accordance with the historic district requirements of Sewickley.
For the project, CFB worked through the CM with design/build contractors for the MEP work. This process of working with M/E engineers retained by the design/build contractor was one of close coordination, as dictated by the need to fit the ductwork, lighting, speaker sound and electronic systems into the large auditorium space. Because the existing building had a number of additions and renovations over time, the project became complex at the interfaces between existing construction and new.
